Ultraman Leo is a wild blend of intense emotionality, fierce battles, whimsical humor, and psychedelic visual effects following The Monster Attack Crew, Gen Otori, and Dan Moroboshi on their journey through the human experience and epic Kaiju madness.

After having been brutally defeated by Alien Magma and the Giras Brothers in episode one, “The Day When Ultraseven Dies is the Day when Tokyo Sinks!,”Dan Moroboshi loses his ability to transform into Ultraseven, and must turn to the prince of the lost Planet L77 once destroyed by the Magma, Ultraman Leo (AKA Gen Otori) to fill his role as Earth’s defender. Seeking to protect his new, adopted homeworld, Gen joins MAC (Monster Attacking Crew), led by Dan, and turns his pain into strength.

Ultraman Leo is the first installment of the series to showcase a direct mentor/mentee relationship between two Ultras. The emotional tension of the majority of the show is built on the foundation of Dan and Gen’s dynamic.

However, just because Ultraseven isn’t in a position to show up after the first episode doesn’t mean the show is without the warriors from the Land of Light. Episode 38, “Showdown! The Leo Brothers vs the Ultra Brothers” features Ultra Brothers Zoffy, Ultraman, Ultraman Jack, and Ultraman Ace as they pursue the missing Ultra Key. When they find that the thief is Leo’s brother Astra, things get complicated.

In Episode 39, “The Leo Brothers and the Ultra Brothers, Time of Victory”, the iconic Ultraman King uses his ancient wisdom and incomprehensible power to reveal the truth of the conflict and point them to the mastermind trying to pit hero against hero, the devious Alien Barbarue.

Leo earns every win, putting his martial arts skills to the test each episode, fighting ruthless battles against merciless enemies. Practical explosions, structure-consuming tsunamis, plummeting buildings, and tumbling bridges collapse into each other at the hands of the cruelest and most destructive villains yet, cast in sharper and more vibrant visuals than ever — Tsuburaya’s visual style takes the martial arts film-inspired action to new heights.

Propelled by Dan’s strict, sometimes-spartan training, Leo is able to go head-to-head with Kaiju as cruel as they are powerful, like the bloodthirsty Alien Turuk, the horned Kanedoras, and even the horrible Silverbloome, who traumatized viewers in episode 40 “The Terrifying Saucer Creature Series! MAC Annihilated! The Flying Saucer is Alive!", and is responsible for one of the greatest atrocities in the entire series — the annihilation of an entire defense team. Episode 40 is notoriously one of the most brutal episodes of the franchise to date, and deserves a place on every collector’s shelf.

Leo consistently stays resilient through adversity, consistently navigating grief, responsibility, and the overwhelming magnitude of tragedy that he’s faced with. Leo serves as a reminder that although life can be destructive and painful, it is equally full of bliss and unpredictable joy.
