Recently, the Ultraman Card Game debuted a number of new cards for Booster Pack 03 Shadow of Undying Vengeance. Among these, one that stood out particularly was the art for BP03-079, Eleking the Space Monster, whose art by Bob Eggleton isn’t only in the English version of the game, but has even been imported to Japan through a special promo campaign!
We caught up with Eggleton to ask him a bit about the card, his process, and what’s next — Read below!
UC: This is not your first card for the Ultraman Card Game. What was the process of being contacted for this project like for you?
BE: Well, a friend connected me with Jeff Gomez and Chrysoula Artemis. Just great people. Jeff was a fan of my art for years. And the first card, Gomora happened to be my favorite and first Ultra monster I saw, in 1971 when Ultraman ran on UHF TV near me. So this was full circle.
UC: Your Eleking is a very different sort of creature from the Gomora you drew for BP02 Vortex of Crimson and Azure. What were you trying to evoke in this piece?
BE: Eleking as we know is from Ultraseven. That show focused on aliens and robotic beings as enemies. So the feel was different. I wanted to evoke possibly the surface of some other planet. Because he is all oddly shaped and has this black and ivory white color scheme, he had to look interesting and alien. A little stark and menacing. There are also different versions of Eleking over the decades.
UC: There are literal thousands of Ultra Kaiju, with countless variations and distinct designs. Are there any you would be particularly interested to draw next?
BE: Oh yeah. Woo the snow monster, Jirass which was another classic monster in disguise, some of the more dinosaurian Kaiju. Chandlar. Red King.
Booster Pack 03: Shadow of Undying Vengeance comes out on April 25th, 2025, and there are tons of incredible arts exclusive to the English version of the game still to come! To keep up-to-date on those reveals, check out the Ultraman Card Game website, and stay close to Ultraman Connection!
