Hop on to the wild ride that is Ultraman Taro, now available for the first time on Blu-Ray in the Mill Creek 6-Disc Box Set! Now the thrilling escapades of the sixth Ultra can be enjoyed in stunning high definition with enhanced audio and English subtitles on all 53 episodes of the series.
The box set features a sleek slide-out case, with a power shot of Taro on the outside cover and a hero stance on the inside cover. The dread Birdon makes an appearance on the back, his fleshy snoods engorged, claws bared.
With courage burning bright as the sun, Ultraman Taro is one of the most powerful Ultras in Showa history. Son of Mother and Father of Ultra and youngest yet of the Ultra Brothers, Taro has trained his whole life to become one of the strongest heroes of his time.
When boxer Kotaro Higashi is killed by the Kaiju Astromons, the Ultra Brothers bring him to the Land of Light, where Taro awaits. The two merge together to defend Earth from intergalactic threats.
The valiant ZAT (Zariba of All Territory), Captain Shiratori and his son Kenichi, and Taro face off against a myriad of classic antagonists and Kaiju, such as Eleking, Alien Meflias, Bemstar, Yapool, and Verokron.
However, Taro is known for its fascinating original foes. The series introduces a host of far more bizarre characters than ever before, from Live King, who drinks fellow Kaiju Cosmo Liquid (something that does not kill Cosmo Liquid, by the way) and has to be detonated in space to be stopped, to Depparas, the ketchup-loving walrus monster turned zombie. There’s also Veron, who is literally just a giant alcoholic beast that Taro must sober up. In general, the threats, and the show in general, take from the idea of fairy tales and other stories with heightened reality — a perfect fit for Ultraman!
When the threat gets too real and even the ‘brave one who loves justice’, Taro, cannot take on his enemies alone, he must call on the Ultra Brothers to lend him strength against formidable foes. Zoffy, Ultraman, Ultraseven, Ultraman Jack, and Ultraman Ace make several appearances in the series and face some of the most fearsome challenges they’ve ever dealt with.
Episodes 33-34 ‘Five Seconds Before the Big Explosion of the Land of Ultra’ and ‘The Last Day of the 6 Ultra Brothers’ follow the brothers as they attempt to spend quality time together on Earth, only to be targeted by the relentless Alien Temperor (and his cymbal-smashing monkey companion).
In the unforgettably-named episode 18 ‘Zoffy Died! Taro Died Too!’ the title tells us all we need to know in terms of where the show is willing to go. At the hands of the terrifying Birdon, the stakes reach new heights as our Ultras. Lives are lost, and history is made. This episode alone makes the box set a must-have for any fan!
The set comes complete with a full-sized episode and information guide booklet
Packed with insights on the history of the series, hero and character profiles, and kaiju and technology breakdowns.
Ultraman Taro is responsible for a lot of firsts. It’s one of the first Ultra series to really establish the lore of the Land of Light, exploring it in far more depth than ever before. We get to understand the family dynamics and motivations of Ultras and the show gives us an inside look on how Ultras function amongst one another.
Taro is also the first Ultra to call his attacks aloud. Now in Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0, hear Taro shout ‘Storium Beam!’ as he shoots his classic finisher and watch in high definition as he shoots lightning from his iconic horns. Become an expert and read about all his different attack moves in the info guide.
Airing in 1973, Ultraman Taro captures the eclectic nature of the surreal, vibrant children’s media of the 70s. With a versatile range of tones, we get to see fantastical fairytale-adjacent elements throughout the series but not without some surprisingly intense, gruesome moments. Deviating from the more serious and realistic atmosphere of Ultraseven and Ace, this show has all the teachable lessons and values of those before it while doubling the fun.
