This year’s spooky season is even more exciting than usual with the newest episode of Ultraman Blazar fitting right on theme. Episode 16 “Terror from the Underground” featured Mogusion, the mole Kaiju that can gaslight anyone into hallucinating their worst fears, a perfect eerie episode just in time for Halloween!
Mogusion was unearthed when a group of construction workers accidentally drilled a hole right to him. When Mogusion scared the living daylights out of the crew by getting into their heads and exploited their deepest fears, many of us were left wondering what horrifying truths we would discover about ourselves if our worst fears showed up in the hole… Others are more concerned with the practical elements of the crisis.
Getting to see what the crewmates are afraid of gave us a lot of new insight to the characters. I think we were all left with a multitude of questions like ‘what is Emi’s inner turmoil and why is her greatest fear herself?’ and ‘why does Teruaki think bean cakes are so gross?’

Even though Teruaki wins the ‘most freaked out’ award for this episode, it’s actually Emi who has a very layered moment of true panic. Even if we’re not all piloting a giant Mecha against a huge illusion-weaponizing mole monster, life can be so anxiety-inducing that we feel like we are. Emi’s experience portrayed something many of us resonate with.
ladies and gentlemen it's with great pleasure i tell you all that Ultraman Blazar episode 16 includes a realistic depiction of a panic attack

And just like in real life, it was remembering who she was through the important connections she’s made that helped revitalize Emi. We might not always get a say in how much we have to get done or even if we’re capable of doing what we have to, but we always get a say in how much help we receive. There’s no shame in needing some support, and the SKaRD team exemplified just that.
We also got to hear the new voice of an old friend. That’s right, Earth Garon can talk.
Many people were pleasantly surprised by Earth Garon’s soothing voice. Others weren’t surprised at all that Yasunobu would program him to sound so charming given the pilot’s affinity for machines. Others were just stoked that Earth Garon even has the ability to go full AI autopilot!

Blazar was put to the test with the resilient Mogusion, but alas, he took a moment to close his eyes and face his fate just like Emi had to. Though, not without using some classic Blazar moves and handy tools!

This week’s episode was tons of fun, but I can’t be the only one left wondering what Blazar’s fear would be. Much to ponder until next episode!
